Sustained Investigation Post #11

Mark Making

For this Illustration, I wanted to work a bit on drawing an organic setting, so for my sketch, I pretty much only laid out the basic colors of each section of the illustration in opposition to any bold sketch lines. I wanted to return to a more digital painting, video game, or animation style for this illustration. I wanted it to seem more put together and clean than some of my other stylistic choices.

Idea

The idea of this illustration was meant to represent a nervous breakdown. The term "nervous breakdown" is sometimes used by people to describe a stressful situation in which they're temporarily unable to function normally in day-to-day life. It's commonly understood to occur when life's demands become physically and emotionally overwhelming. The recovery process isn’t linear. There are drops, and there are drawbacks. That is normal. You will come out of it with a new view.

Materials/Technique

I used Procreate to do this, digital being my media of choice. I used a mix of default and custom brushes to complete it, but went about the whole thing as I normally would, blocking out color, setting out basic shadows, and then rendering and smoothing out the whole illustration. The only difference with this to some of my other pieces is it's mostly done on the same layer.

Relevance to the project

Throughout the story, this illustration lies somewhere in the middle of the series. It sits alongside a couple of other illustrations that can be viewed as a storyline of the character's action. It represents a major idea and aspect of the SI as a whole.
