Blog Post #13; SI Rewrite

My sustained investigation surrounds the question of “How can someone with OCD find order amongst chaos in the world”. The SI as a whole is meant to illustrate different aspects of OCD as well as show the feelings linked to everyday living. It’s not necessarily supposed to be a perfectly nice and linear story of improvement, but instead shows failure, fear, and the grit one has to endure to progress individually before they find their own personal sense of comfort or consistency. A lot of this is meant to reflect on personal experiences and thoughts, yet still touches on more general feelings linked to OCD as a whole. I have personal experiences that I know are independent, and the entire SI is in regards to my own experiences with OCD, but there are still aspects and general ideas that I touch on that are simply a part of how OCD manifests.

One of the main aspects of my SI I focused on in terms of progressing and experimenting as an artist is how throughout the illustrations, there is evidence of change to the world and general world building that the “main character” exists in. This ranges from a mechanical arm symbolizing imperfection or feeling “broken” all the way to the way plants affect the environment, making it look more crowded and chaotic. Doing this as well as learning more about how color and emotion are linked together in art, shifting around tones and learning about gradient maps as I continue on throughout these drawings. There is also a theme of using light and shadows in order to push an emotional narration for the viewer. While each illustration is symbolic in itself, they also work together to create a sort of narrative or story
